NEW ATTENDANCE POLICY

PLEASE NOTE THE NEW ATTENDANCE POLICY CHANGE ON PAGES 14/15 OF THE STUDENT HANDBOOK.  IT GOES AS FOLLOWS:

Regular and punctual school attendance is essential for success in school.  The Committee does recognize that parents/guardians of children attending our schools have special rights as well as responsibilities, one of which is to ensure that their children attend school regularly, in accordance with the state law.

At the commencement of each school year, parents/guardians will be sent a notice instructing them to call a designated telephone number to inform the school of the student's absence and the reason for such absence.  If the school does not receive a message from the parent/guardian by a designated time, then the school shall call the telephone number or numbers furnished to inquire about the student's absence.  Parents/guardians will be contacted within three (3) days of the student's absence if the Parent(s) or Guardian has not contacted the school regarding the absence.

Parent(s) or Guardians will be notified when a student has five or more unexcused absences in a marking term.  Unexcused absences may result in parental contact, further investigation, and appropriate action as determined by building administration.  More than eight (8) unexcused absences will be subject to administrative review and possible action.

Parent(s) or Guardians are encouraged to contact school staff and work collaboratively with them to correct the reasons that the student is missing school.

EXCUSED ABSENCE/TARDY INCLUDES:

◊Documented illness or injury (with medical documentation)

◊Bereavement/family funeral

◊Major religious observances

◊Court

◊Extraordinary family circumstances (excused at the discretion of the Principal)

AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE/TARDY is not covered by the aforementioned definition.  Examples of an unexcused absence may include, but may not be limited to:

◊Truancy

◊Family vacations

◊Undocumented absences

◊Non-emergency family situations

♦ FAMILY VACATIONS

Parents/Guardians and students are reminded that Massachusetts Law requires compulsory attendance for students.  We strongly discourage family vacations when school is in session.  In addition to compromising the attendance law, family vacations interrupt the educational process of each course in ways make-up work cannot reverse.  Teachers are not required to give out homework assignments prior to a family vacation.

Chronic absenteeism may lead to academic failure for the year.

If you have any questions regarding the attendance policy, please refer to pages 14 & 15 of the Student Handbook and the Frequently Asked Questions tab on the JBMS website.

 ♦ ALL NOTES

Students should bring all notes to the office window first thing upon arriving in the morning.  This includes:  Dismissal notes, medical notes, and bus notes.  If you need to ride a different bus home you must bring your note to the office in the morning.  Bus passes will not be issued after 2:00 P.M.

♦ HOT LUNCHES

If you elect to get a hot lunch from the cafeteria, please be sure to bring the appropriate amount of money or a check for your lunches.  The Jabish Brook Cafeteria will only allow you to charge 2 lunches.

SPAGHETTI DINNER TO SUPPORT GRADE 8 NYC FIELD TRIP:

There will be a spaghetti dinner on Sunday, April 30th from 5:00 - 7:30 PM in the JBMS cafeteria.  The money goes to support the 8th grade class field trip to New York City.  Adults are $7.00 and students are $5.00.  You can pre-order tickets through Ms. G.  If you already sold tickets, please hand in the money to Ms. G. as soon as possible.
